First Spiritualist Temple is built.
1885
Architect: Hartwell & Richardson. Originally the Working Union of Progressive Spiritualists, it is designed in the Romanesque Revival style and located at 26 Exeter Street. The oldest Christian Spiritualist Church in the world, the congregation was founded by Marcellus Ayer on June 28, 1883. The building’s second floor hall seats 1,300, and when the congregation moves downstairs, it is converted to a theater in 1914.* After the congregation sells the building, it is renovated by CBT Associates. The theater closes in 1984, the building is converted to retail use, then becomes home to the Kingsley Montessori School in 2005.
